Non-essential travel to Spain from Germany is discouraged due to the increasing number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 in both Spain and Germany, where the number of new positive people tested exceeded 1,500 yesterday. The travel advice is compiled by the German Ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs, which are based on the criteria of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) that is competent in the matter. The institute has calculated that 1 in 3 infections is contracted abroad. Furthermore, the RKI takes as a reference for that assessment regions or zones where 50 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants have been exceeded in a week. About 130 countries are located in this category, including several regions of Belgium, Romania and Bulgaria, as well as Luxembourg in the European Union (EU). The rest of the risk areas are third countries, such as Turkey and part of the Balkans, but also Russia, the United States and large parts of Africa, Asia and Oceania.
Germans in Spain
Spain, with the Balearic Islands as the top destination, is the favorite holiday destination for Germans. Last year, according to data from the Spanish statistical office, a total of 11,176,545 Germans visited Spain. In August 2019 alone, more than a million Spaniards came to Spain for holidays.
Germans in the Balearic Islands
Germany is the most important tourist market for the Balearic Islands. In 2019, more than 4.5 million German tourists traveled to Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. Last July, after the arrival of the ‘new normal’, only 19,680 Germans came to the Balearic Islands. That is 96.9 percent less than in July last year.
Obligation to take a test
Since last Saturday, for people traveling to Germany from Spain or one of the other 130 or so risk areas worldwide, it has been mandatory after arrival to take a test – or to present a negative test that has been performed within the last 48 hours. Until the results are obtained, the traveler remains in quarantine. If the test is negative, it is recommended to have a second test after five days to confirm the first result.
