Due to the flat tire, Van der Poel had to go deep with some other riders too early in the race to come back. “I lost a good result there. We went over our limit because of that and then it was ready. ” With the latter, ‘VDP’ meant about fifty kilometers from the finish, where he had to unload definitively.
Strade Bianche turned out to be a real wear and tear, mainly because of the warm temperatures above forty degrees. “It was very warm,” agreed Van der Poel, who did not want to quote the heat as an excuse. “Everyone had problems with that. My biggest problem, I think, was the flat tire. ”

For a long time Van der Poel had faith in a good classification and stated that the final result now gave a distorted picture. “I felt good. I am also disappointed. It was difficult to finish the race, especially mentally. But I’m glad I did it. ”
With Strade Bianche, the cycling world had the restart of the season after a long break because of the corona virus. “I am happy that we can cycle again and I hope we can continue to do so in a safe environment,” says Van der Poel. Milan-Turin is scheduled for the 25-year-old Dutchman on Wednesday. This race mainly serves as preparation for the classic Milan-Sanremo, which will be held on Saturday. “I’m going for a good result on Wednesday, because you will also take something like that to Milan-Sanremo.”
