As expected, the decision fell in the last four steep kilometers to the top of the Lagunas de Neila. Evenepoel’s closest competitors George Bennett and Mikel Landa immediately went on the offensive, but were easily countered by Evenepoel. When his teammate Almeida came back to join, the Brabander decided to attack himself. Overconfidence? Perhaps! It was certainly not smart. Landa and the returned Sosa returned to the leader’s wheel and also abandoned Evenepoel in the final meters. Sosa bagged the stage, Landa stranded in second place at nine seconds from Sosa. Evenepoel did determine his overall victory. He finished third in eleven seconds from the stage winner. For Sosa, it was the third year in a row that he could win on this final climb.
