‘Fifty rules’ for Van Polen: ‘I still texted: are we going to play football too?’

PEC Zwolle figurehead Bram van Polen was on the field for the first time in a long time on Saturday: The Blauwvingers opened the preseason with an exhibition game with SC Cambuur. However, playing football in a new reality took some getting used to for Van Polen.

The routine had to take into account ‘fifty rules’. “We got that through the app. We had a timetable and we had to be here with a margin of five minutes,” he told RTV Oost. “Those are all those peripheral matters. Very logical, but I did send a message to Isaak (Teunis, the PEC team manager, ed.): are we going to play football or not?Van Poland added with a smile.

The 34-year-old defender, however, thoroughly enjoyed his first game in almost five months. “It is still a bit of a search. But I found it very nice to be back on the field,” said Van Polen. “We are allowed again. It is the medical staff in particular who are very busy with it. Once you are back on the field, it does not play such a role.”

PEC eventually lost 2-0 to Cambuur. The next job against AZ awaits on Wednesday 5 August.
