It had not mattered much before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had moved to Chelsea in January. The Daily Mail writes that the entourage of the 31-year-old striker of Arsenal contacted on his own initiative the Blues about a racy transition within the Premier League. Due to Aubameyang’s exorbitant salary demands, a transfer to Chelsea did not get off the ground.
Aubameyang’s future at Arsenal has been uncertain for some time as his contract expires in mid-2021 and no agreement has yet been reached on a new commitment. His entourage would have looked for a solution in January and threw a line at Chelsea. The Blues were interested in bringing in the Gabonese striker, but dropped out when the salary requirements were announced.
Aubameyang would have asked for such a high salary that with such a contract he would have become the highest paid player in Chelsea’s club history. That is still Eden Hazard, who would have earned more than 220,000 euros per week (11.4 million euros per year) until his departure for Real Madrid. He was followed by N’Golo Kanté and Kepa Arrizabalaga, who earn 167,000 euros per week (8.7 million euros per year).
Arsenal is currently paying Aubameyang a comparable salary to Hazard’s at Chelsea, but the striker is looking for a substantial salary increase with a possible new contract. In the negotiations with the Gunners over a longer stay, he reportedly demanded a three-year commitment with a weekly salary of $ 278,000, or $ 14.5 million a year. In any case, Chelsea does not intend to pay Aubameyang such a salary, so that the negotiations in January came to nothing.
Chelsea is still looking for a striker despite bringing in Timo Werner, but Aubameyang’s name will only appear on the radar if he plans to tone down his demands. Arsenal paid 64 million euros in January 2018 to take over the striker from Borussia Dortmund. In 108 performances before the Gunners Aubameyang accounted for 68 goals and 15 assists. The 51-time international of Gabon can take his first main prize with Arsenal on Saturday evening, if – in the final of the FA Cup – Chelsea is settled.
