Estavana Polman misses the European Handball Championship in December. The 27-year-old Gelderlandse has torn a cruciate ligament in her right knee and has been out for months.
Polman sustained the injury on Thursday during a joint training of her club Team Esbjerg and Odense HC. She immediately had a scan made in the hospital, which caused a major damper.
“I immediately felt it was serious. I can’t help it, this is the risk of playing handball. I hope to have surgery as soon as possible and then work hard during my rehabilitation. Shit happens”, says Polman on Saturday the website of Team Esbjerg.
Polman won the world title with the Netherlands last year. She was voted best player of the tournament and earlier this week also received a nomination for world players of the year from the international association IHF.
Born in Arnhem has been a fixture at Oranje for years. She played 134 international matches since her debut in 2010 and scored 488 goals. The gold medal at last year’s World Cup is her biggest success with the Netherlands.
Polman is also almost missing in the entire coming season with Team Ebsjerg. She has been active with that Danish superpower since 2013 and previously wore the shirt of Sønderjysk HK (2011-2013), VOC (2010-2011) and AAC 1899 (2005-2010).
