A staff member of Team Sunweb tested positive for the corona virus. The team reports this on its website tonight. The team emphasizes that the employee concerned – who would travel with the team to the Tour de l’Ain – has not been in contact with riders in recent months.
Team Sunweb staff members who go to a match are tested twice. The first time six days before the start of a match, the second time three days before. The UCI also prescribes this for WorldTour races, but not for competitions such as the Tour de l’Ain that are not part of the WorldTour or the ProSeries.
“As a sport, cycling puts a lot of time, energy and money into creating a safe bubble. The main reason for pre-testing is to keep this bubble “clean”. That has proven itself here early in the season, ”the team reports.
The employee concerned felt sick, but did not show the symptoms associated with COVID-19. “Our medical team will continue to monitor the situation and determine when he can return to competitions or training camps,” it said.
