Washington is the defending champion in the WNBA and was the only one of the 12 teams to lose.

Against Chicago, the team led at half-time (37-35), but in the last two quarters the opposition turned out to be slightly stronger (25-27, 24-26).

Emma Meesseman played for more than half an hour on Saturday. The Belgian Cat made nine points, picked nine rebounds and handed out six assists. Teammate Ariel Atkins became top scorer with 24 points.

Because of the loss, Washington now has to share the lead with Chicago, Seattle Storm and Minnesota Lynx, who also won three times in four games.

Indiana Fever, Julie Allemand’s team, is eighth with a three-game win
