The bicycles of the Trek-Segafredo women’s team were stolen in the night from Friday to Saturday. As a result, Ellen van Dijk and Lucinda Brand, among others, will have to start on spare bicycles in Strade Bianche.
The team reports that thieves managed to enter the truck through the top and stole six bicycles. Remarkably, the bicycle of the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini was not taken. She won Strade Bianche in 2017.
The riders will now start on spare bikes that the American team has with them. Van Dijk’s second bicycle is of a different model. She therefore rides on the bicycle of Koen de Kort, who rides in the men’s team of Trek. “That bike has been converted to my sizes, so we can get off to a good start,” says Van Dijk to the WE.
“That was really crazy waking up for us and also a bit of a shock,” she says. “Fortunately, everything has already been arranged, but it is very sour.”
Van Vleuten and Alaphilippe defending champions in Tuscany
The Strade Bianche for women starts at 11.55 am. The peloton travels 136 kilometers, partly on the white unpaved roads to which the race got its name. Last year’s winner, Annemiek van Vleuten, is now also at the start.
The men will start with title defender Julian Alaphilippe in Siena at 1.45 p.m. They drive 184 kilometers.
