Not only the departure of Hakim Ziyech, but also that of Joël Veltman is a loss for Ajax. That says Keje Molenaar, who thinks that the Amsterdammers are not yet ready for the new season.

“Veltman was important for the breadth of your selection. He can play right back and central,” says Molenaar at NH Sportcafé. According to the former Ajax player, the Orange international can also take steps. “There is much more quality in it than he has shown. I think because of the criticism he received and the stress, he has shown less than he really can. I think he will flourish in England.”

Without Veltman and Ziyech, Ajax started preparing for the new season on Saturday. Molenaar thinks that there is still a lot to be done. “If you have lost Ziyech and Veltman and if I see what the purchases are so far …”, he refers to Antony and Mohammed Kudus. “I don’t know if Ajax is ready. And if Onana, Tagliafico and Van de Beek are still leaving, you have to invest.”

Molenaar receives support from Gerard van der Lem, former assistant coach of Ajax. “Of the top four, AZ and Feyenoord are now in the best position.”
