Matthijs de Ligt has vacation, Memphis Depay and Kenny Tete can report to the last eight in Lisbon. Olympique Lyon has put down a Champions League stunt of format on Friday evening by eliminating Juventus. Thanks to Memphis, the French took the lead early in Turin, were then allowed to score two goals and did so: thanks to the 2-1 defeat, L’OL reached the quarterfinals.

Juventus had to score – with the 1-0 defeat at the end of February – but it was Olympique Lyon that got the first chances and made the first goal. Rodrigo Bentancur made an apparently correct sliding, but the ball went on the spot: Memphis claimed the penalty, surprised Wojciech Szczesny with a panenka and signed for the surprising 0-1.

For a long time, Juventus did not get further than a solo on the back line from Federico Bernardeschi, who was narrowly stopped by former PSV player Marcelo. Just before half-time, it came back into the game after the second dubious penalty of the evening was awarded. Memphis was in the wall with a free kick by Miralem Pjanic and, according to referee Felix Zwayer, made hands: Cristiano Ronaldo took advantage of the opportunity and made it 1-1.

The old lady needed two more goals to push through and made the first after an hour of play. Ronaldo decided to try it from a great distance with the left and stunned goalkeeper Anthony Lopes with a devastating bang: 2-1. This pegel was the start of a nerve-racking final phase, in which both teams smelled a hit. Ronaldo seemed to make his third, but headed just over and Olympique Lyon on the other side screamed for a penalty for alleged hands.

The French eventually held their ground and were able to celebrate. Juventus brought in the not entirely fit Paulo Dybala, but the Argentinian had to be replaced shortly afterwards. Tete came in at the start of the six-minute injury time and the home team’s final offensive never got off the ground. The Gones take on Manchester City in Lisbon.
