The West Brabant town of Bergen op Zoom will check more strictly in the near future whether people in restaurants, bars and entertainment venues keep enough distance from each other and whether there are not too many people inside. Supermarkets should be more careful that not too many people do their shopping at the same time and that shopping carts and baskets are properly disinfected. Bergen op Zoom is relatively one of the largest hot spots in the Netherlands.
The city council is concerned and wants to see whether more measures are needed next week. “I have seen in recent weeks that attention for the rules has weakened. Young people in particular keep little distance,” said Mayor Frank Petter.
Mobile test street
For the past two days, a mobile test street was in Bergen op Zoom. There, 452 people were tested and of them 50 actually had the virus. That 11 percent of positive tests is well above the national level. In the Netherlands as a whole, just over 2 percent of all tests were positive last week.
In the past two weeks, the corona virus has been diagnosed in 97 residents of Bergen op Zoom. In Tilburg, the largest city in the region, ‘only’ 52 corona cases came to light in the same period.
