Corona returns after 102 days: Closed in New Zealand’s big city

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden said today (Tuesday) that authorities have located four cases of the corona virus in one house in the city of Auckland from an unknown source. This is the first local infection in the country after 102 days.

Ardren said the severity of the situation in Auckland, the largest city in the country, has risen to level 3, meaning residents will be required to stay indoors and many other bars and businesses will close, from noon to midnight on Friday. The rest of the country will be below level 2. Only yesterday did the authorities warn against complacency, after marking a hundred days without a local case of infection in the island nation, which is considered a global success story in the fight against the virus.

“These three days will give us time to assess the situation, gather information, ensure extensive contact detection so we can know know about these cases and make decisions on how to respond,” she said. “I know this information is very difficult to digest. We all hoped not to find ourselves in this situation again, but we prepared for it. And as a group, we were in this situation already.”
