Campsites near Marseille cleared due to major forest fire, nearly 1,000 acres of forest already destroyed

Yesterday afternoon, the emergency services were confronted with several fires, which were fueled by a strong wind. The situation around Martigues, just west of Marseille, is particularly serious.

Holidaymakers from different campsites had to gather on the beach. Then they were evacuated by sea and then taken by buses to a sports hall, where they could spend the night.

Several local residents also had to leave their homes, but according to the latest reports, no casualties have occurred. However, some homes and vehicles have been damaged. In some places the electricity has also failed.

In total, 850 hectares of forest have already gone up in smoke. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin is on the spot and speaks of “a drama for biodiversity”.
