Kiki Bertens will have no chance to defend her title at the Madrid WTA tournament next month. The tournament has been canceled by order of the Spanish authorities because of the corona virus.
Last year, Bertens took one of her ten WTA titles on the clay court in Madrid by settling with Simona Halep in the final. This year’s edition has already been moved from May to September, but is now canceled.
The same goes for the men’s edition, which would be played simultaneously. Madrid is one of the places where the number of corona infections has been increasing recently.
Deleting the tournament in Madrid means further depleting the WTA calendar. As a result of the corona outbreak, more tournaments have been canceled in recent months.
The first WTA tournament since the corona crisis is currently being played in Palermo. After the clay tournament in Sicily, a clay tournament in Prague and hard courts in Lexington and New York will follow in the run-up to the US Open.
