Rabbi Adin Even Yisrael Steinsaltz passed away this morning (Friday), after his health deteriorated in the past week.

Rabbi Steinsaltz was a Chabad follower and prolific author of Jewish thought books and commentaries, especially on Talmud and Hasidism. Autodidact. Winner of the Israel Prize for Jewish Studies in 1988, Medal of the President of the State of Israel for 2012 and Dear Jerusalem for 2017.

Rabbi Steinsaltz was known mainly for his commentary on the Talmud. He served as president of the Makor Chaim and Shefa Makor Chaim high school yeshivot, as well as president of the Tekoa yeshiva.

Rabbi Steinsaltz was born in Jerusalem into a secular family to Abraham Steinsaltz, who was the grandson of the first Rebbe of Slonim, and was a student of Hillel Zeitlin and through him he met his future wife, Rebecca Leah nee Krukowitz.

He immigrated to Israel in 1924 from Warsaw, Poland. He was a member of the Lehi and a communist. In 1936 he traveled to Spain to join the international brigades that fought in the civil war there.

In his teens, Rabbi Steinsaltz repented. The process began with the help of Rabbi Shmuel Elazar Heilperin. He studied at the Yeshiva of Innocent Supporters of Chabad Chassidut in the city of Lod. Among others, he studied with Rabbis Dov Ber Eliezerov, Shlomo Chaim Kesselman and Nahum Shmaryahu Sheshkin

He later studied chemistry and physics at the Hebrew University and Torah studies at yeshivas in Jerusalem. When he was 24, he was appointed the youngest school principal in the country. Has a broad education in various fields of knowledge.

In 1955, he married Chaya Sara, the daughter of Chaim Hillel Azimov.

In 1991, he changed his last name to Even Yisrael on the recommendation of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of Chabad.

In 2017, he was awarded the title “Dear City of Jerusalem”.

In December 2016, Kislev 5777, had a severe stroke.

On the 17th of Av 5764, he died after a struggle with severe pneumonia.
