You have undoubtedly read it here in recent weeks and days: AG2R Citroën strengthens itself with the Belgians Stan Dewulf and Gijs Van Hoecke. Both transfers have just been confirmed by the team. They both signed a two-year deal.
“After five years with Lotto Soudal (divided between the training and the main team, red), I am ready for a new step in my career,” says 22-year-old Stan Dewulf. “My French will have to improve a bit, but I am enthusiastic.” The West of Flanders refers to the temperament of Oliver Naesen about his abilities as a rider. “That is quite similar. I will do my very best, but at the same time keep my feet on the ground. I won the U23 version of Paris-Roubaix and that is also the match I dream of. I want to shine in that. ”
Gijs Van Hoecke knows Oliver Naesen even better. “Very well indeed. We were once neighbors, we raced together with the juniors, but also for a year at Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise. I am delighted to be able to ride with him and his brother Lawrence and share my experience in the classics. ” The Tour of Flanders is his dream race. “I may not be able to win the match myself, but I will do everything I can to assist our leaders.”
“Stan is one of the greatest Belgian talents in classical work,” adds team manager Vincent Lavenu. “His arrival reinforces our ambitions in this work. That he won Paris-Roubaix as a promise proves that he has the skills. Our leader Oliver Naesen wanted a rider next to him who can protect him during the classics at strategic moments. Gijs is the right man for that. He will completely outplay himself for his leader. “
