After the deadline, UEFA has no news for KNVB: Ajax and AZ are still in suspense

Ajax and AZ would actually know where they stand on Monday, but are still in suspense. UEFA has not yet announced on Monday which Eredivisie club is the first registered for the Champions League and which club must enter in the second preliminary rounds.

The deadline for European registrations expired on Monday evening. AZ had appealed against the distribution of the Eredivisie tickets and would therefore hear on Monday whether it could take the place of Ajax. However, UEFA has not yet communicated this to the KNVB, the Dutch Football Association has announced to Voetbal International.

Ajax was equal to AZ in points when the league was stopped, but was named number one on goal difference, while AZ had to do it with a place as runner-up. The difference between spot one and spot two is huge, with a view to the upcoming Champions League season. As it stands, Ajax may directly enter the group stage, unless Napoli or Olympique Lyon wins the Champions League. AZ on the other hand will have to survive three preliminary rounds. The Alkmaarders will meet Besiktas, Viktoria Plzen or Rapid Wien in the preliminary rounds.
