After nine years back at Ajax: “It feels nice, when you actually come home”

Maarten Stekelenburg is happy to be back at Ajax. On Saturday, the 37-year-old goalkeeper stepped into the training field of the Amsterdammers for the first time in nine years.

“It feels nice, when I come home,” says Stekelenburg in front of the AT5 camera. “Of course you hope for that if you decide to go to the Netherlands, so it’s great for me.”

Stekelenburg is the second goalkeeper. He does not yet know exactly what his role will be. “I’ve also gotten a day older. I’ve just arrived here, trying to train, work hard and then we’ll see what happens next. That’s what I’ve been doing at Everton in recent years.”

Stekelenburg may play a role in preventing transfers from strongmen, such as Donny van de Beek. “I just happened to tell Donny to stay. What he said? Well, fine,” jokes Stekelenburg.
