In 1942, 78 years before Beirut, Tessenderlo experienced a similar disaster. An explosion of three hundred tons of ammonium nitrate, a fraction of the amount in Lebanon, devastated an entire village, killing 190 people. René Van Thienen (94) lost two brothers.
