The events happened between 11.30 pm between Ostend and Middelkerke, near the provincial domain of Raversijde. There the route runs right next to the Zeedijk, but it is also a place where there is hardly any street lighting. The young man ended up on the tracks for an unknown reason. The tram driver threw the brakes on, but was unable to avoid a collision.
The emergency services quickly came to the scene, but all help turned out to be too late: the fire brigade was able to free the young man from under the tram, but only the death could still be determined.
A traffic expert investigates the facts of the accident. It is certain that this is not an act of desperation. ‘The few passengers have switched to shuttle buses that have just taken over tram traffic. Tram traffic was hindered by the accident for some time. This is the first coastal tram fatality this summer. We hope that this will be a very regrettable event, ‘said De Lijn spokesperson Karen Van der Sype. “Psychological support is provided for the tram driver.”
