Athletics Association World Athletics threatens to cancel Russia’s membership if the country continues to fail to pay a fine of millions. The deadline expires on August 15.
That is what a working group of World Athletics that deals with the Russian doping case decided on Thursday after a video consultation. Working group chairman Rune Andersen said he was disappointed “because very little has changed in Russia”.
In March, the Russian Athletics Association was fined $ 10 million (8.5 million euros) for violating doping rules. Half of them should have been transferred to World Athletics before July 1.
The international federation is now demanding that the $ 5 million plus a fine of $ 1.3 million be paid by 15 August.
“We want to help reorganize Russia”
“We have spent a tremendous amount of time on this matter,” said Norwegian Andersen. “We want to help reorganize the Russian Athletics Federation. It will only benefit clean athletes from that country.”
The Russian Athletics Association has been barred from participating in international tournaments since 2015, after WADA found evidence of massive doping use among athletes from the country. Russia is still challenging that penalty. In November, the International Criminal Court in Sport (CAS) will examine the case.
As long as the case is ongoing, World Athletic Russian athletes are not allowed to participate in international events under neutral flag.
