When during human events, the need arises for a people to dissolve the political ties that have made it close to another people and assumes among the powers of the earth the state of separate and equal power to which the Laws of Nature and the God of Nature give him the right, a convenient regard to the opinions of humanity requires that that people declare the reasons why forced to secede.
This is how it starts Declaration of Independence of the United States of America dated July 4, 1776, which is celebrated today throughout the country with songs, flag-raising, gunshots, parties and fireworks. An anniversary that is a real celebration of being American and of following the principles and values that the Founding Fathers have instilled in the hearts of every self-respecting citizen. And that today is celebrated in an angry, remote and consumed country.
What are these principles? We believe that these truths are self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by the Creator with certain inalienable rights, which are among these rights Life, Freedom, andthe pursuit of happiness; whereas to guarantee these rights, governments are established among men which derive their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government tends to deny these ends, the people have the right to change or abolish it and to establish a new government based on these principles and to organize their powers in the form that seems to the people best suited to procuring their security and his happiness.
The right to happiness
The declaration signed by the thirteen British colonies of the North American Atlantic coast and adopted by the Second Continental Congress a true manifesto of the American dream, recognizes all men the right to pursue happiness, to pursue their goals and to raise the well-being of themselves but also of the community. A principle that has endowed the Americans with an optimistic drive that we European cynics are certainly not equipped with.
During the day of July 4th, the Americans follow a specific ritual, which is usually carried out with participation to the morning parades proposed by the big cities. At military bases, at noon on the dot, as many gunshots are fired as there are States belonging to the USA: the Salute to the Union which recalls the first celebrations of 1777. In the afternoon, however, families gather for the traditional barbecue where the American anthem is also sung. In the evening we watch the fireworks that light up the night of all American cities. What will happen today? We ask for it in the America China newsletter.
Since 1777 the Americans have always celebrated July 4th but only in 1870 the date became a federal holiday. Incredibly two members of the Commission of Five charged with drafting the Declaration John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826.
