Werder Bremen wants “crisis clause” in new player contracts Bundesliga

Frank Baumann, Sporting Director at Werder, told Weser Kurier newspaper that the club’s legal department is working on an arrangement that will allow players to earn up to 20 percent less over a period of time.

“It is an attempt to include a clause to absorb financial risks after unforeseen events,” said Baumann.

Baumann also admitted that there is still some room for maneuver on the percentage that a player should give up on his wages. “We’ll see. One contract can contain a 10 percent reduction, the other a 20 percent reduction.”

The sports director of the Bremen club is also looking at the German football league (DFL), which may come up with a recommendation on the matter, because it is about financial agreements between clubs and players.
