The reason that the Utrecht Pride Demo started late June than planned was that the authorities were not fully aware of the content. This required a new assessment of the risks. That writes acting mayor Peter den Oudsten Monday.

The demonstrators were stopped by the police on 28 June before their march through Utrecht. Participants said that anti-racist expressions such as ‘pro-refugee’ and ‘anti-Zwarte Piet’ were the reason for the delay. This is now confirmed by Den Oudsten.

In answer to written questions from GroenLinks, PvdA, SP, DENK, Party for the Animals and Student & Starter, Den Oudsten says that the protesters had indicated that they wanted to protest ‘for recognition, visibility and celebration of the rights, lives and history of the LGBTQ community ‘.

In addition, the organization had indicated that it wanted to give a short speech to the police station to draw attention to the police violence against this community. “Other objectives of the demonstration have not been reported,” says Den Oudsten.

However, at the start of the Utrecht Pride Demo in the Moreelsepark, officers noticed that subjects such as Black Lives Matter, anti-Zwarte Piet and corona measures were also cited by some protesters.

“A new objective during a demonstration may lead to consultations with the organization and the municipality to determine whether a new assessment of the risks of disorder, traffic or health is required,” says Den Oudsten.
