TO Baltimore, on the east coast of the United States, protesters overturned and removed a statue of Christopher Columbus. It is only the last monument in chronological order that has been targeted by the wave of anti-racist demonstrations triggered by the death of George Floyd, African American killed by police in Minneapolis last May while under arrest. For Donald Trump, engaged in the celebrations of the 4th July in the White House, it is an opportunity to hide the increase in coronavirus infections and return to attack the “enemies” of the left: “Together we will fight for the American dream and we will defend and protect the American way of life, which began in 1492 with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus “. Meanwhile, on America’s birthday, Covid continues to spread with over 43 thousand infections in the last 24 hours. But Trump assures us that “we will have one care or a vaccine “before the end of the year and attack the China: “His secrecy, his deceits and its coverup they allowed the virus to spread around the world. ”
The images released by Baltimore Sun show the statue of Columbus removed with some ropes close to Baltimore’s Little Italy and transported to near port in the night. They want to “throw down the statues, to delete our story, indoctrinating our children, “says the US president. The statues of the Italian explorer around America have ended up in the crosshairs of the campaign demanding the removal from the American streets and squares of racist symbols and of the colonial past, including Columbus.
In a South Lawn of the White House crowded with hundreds of people, few with the mask and all without social distancing, the president does another showdown after that of Mount Rushmore. He carries on his war against the radical left that compare to the Nazis. “American heroes defeated the Nazis and the fascists. Now we are on the way to defeat the radical left, the Marxists, the anarchists, the stirrers and those who in many cases have no idea what they are doing, “says Trump, noting that” our past is not to be thrown away “. Then he launches into an attack against the media, to whom he asks to tell the truth.
The US President’s verbal fury finally lashes out at Beijing: “Its secrecy, its deceptions and its cover-up have allowed the virus to spread all over the world,” attacks Trump. But it is politics that dominates his speech: the president returns to ride it cultural clash and the divisions as well as racism, starting to worry even Republicans, now more and more nervous. The fear is that Trump’s obsession with the cultural and racial confrontation and the management of the pandemic may jeopardize not only his chances of reelection but also the conservative majority in the Senate.
Support ilfattoquotidiano.it: never like now we need you.
In these weeks of pandemic we journalists, if we do our job with conscience, we do a public service. This is also why we are proud every day here at ilfattoquotidiano.it to offer hundreds of new content for free to all citizens: news, exclusive insights, expert interviews, surveys, videos and much more. All this work, however, has a great economic cost. Advertising, in a time when the economy is stagnant, offers limited revenues. Not in line with the access boom. This is why I ask those who read these lines to support us. To give us a minimum contribution, equal to the price of a cappuccino per week, fundamental for our work.
