The system, built on the section between Civitavecchia and Sassari, is part of TIM’s new national photonic platform: a state-of-the-art high-capacity network in WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technique, based on the latest generation of photonic nodes, fully automated, and capable of supporting speeds of 100Gbps up to 1800 kilometers away and 200Gbps up to 800 kilometers. This submarine system is integrated into Tim’s national transport infrastructure, which is divided into over 16,000 kilometers of fiber and which supports a total data traffic of over 50 Terabits per second.
According to the company, the connection with Sardinia represents a “new national record for Tim, the first operator capable of bringing 100Gbps connections from the continent to the island, considering the length of over 430 km distributed over three submarine sections, of which one of 200 km to reach also the Island of Maddalena “. Thanks to the sophisticated amplification mechanisms and the innovative signal modulation techniques used, the system is able to support an overall capacity of the order of 4 Terabits per second.
