To make sure that players with a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One don’t wait to buy FIFA 21 until it has a newer generation in house, EA comes up with something clever. Everyone who buys the game gets an upgrade to the new consoles for free. For this it has started a collaboration with Sony and Microsoft, to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Do I have to buy FIFA 21 twice?
The answer to this question is very simple, namely no. By using so-called Dual Entitlement, EA does not ask you to buy FIFA 21 twice. Once you have replaced your PS4 or Xbox One with a PS5 or Xbox Series X, Dual Entitlement allows you to upgrade your FIFA 21 copy at no extra cost. This is possible until the launch of FIFA 22.
It does not matter here whether you have bought FIFA 21 online or physically. But pay attention! It is true that if you plan to buy the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, it is only possible when FIFA 21 is purchased digitally. EA says that physical disks cannot yet be used to upgrade to diskless consoles.
FIFA 21 on next-gen
If you purchase a physical copy of FIFA 21 on Xbox One or PS4, you can download and play the game on Xbox Series X or PS5 for free from the Microsoft and PlayStation Store. For the PS5 you do need the FIFA 21 CD to play. Your FIFA 21 is digitally bundled on next-gen and can be downloaded from the stores.
FIFA 21 from PS4 to Xbox Series X or Xbox One to PS5?
Unfortunately that is not possible. EA says that a FIFA 21 next-gen upgrade is only possible if you take the game from PlayStation to PlayStation and Xbox to Xbox.
FIFA 21 current-gen to next-gen progress
Not all progress you make at the beginning of FIFA 21 will go to next-gen. Only FIFA Ultimate Team and Volta mode are transferred. Progress in all other modes including Online Seasons, Co-Op Seasons, Career Mode and Pro Clubs is only for the console you are playing on and will not transfer between consoles.
