This is what experts cited by the city hall have estimated.

The people of Nantes will have to wait at least three years before admiring the restored Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul cathedral, according to specialists quoted by the town hall in a press release published Wednesday, July 22. Last weekend, the Gothic building was the scene of a spectacular fire, the origin of which remains unknown.

Initially, the security phases call on around ten experts and will last several weeks. The walls of the western facade of the building, in particular, suffered greatly because of the heat which was released when the great organ burned down.

Otherwise, “there are pieces of the large glass roof scattered all over the place, some of which date from the beginning of the 16th century”, explained Valérie Gaudard, regional curator of historical monuments. “We are committed to recovering them today.” It will then be necessary to carry out a phase of diagnosis before beginning the actual reconstruction.

The Nantes cathedral has in any case been “regularly maintained” in recent years, said Wednesday at a press conference Claude d’Harcourt, prefect of Loire-Atlantique and Pays de la Loire.

“It is an amount of more than 20 million euros that has been allocated to the heavy maintenance of this building in twenty years, without counting the costs of routine maintenance”, said the prefect. A meeting concerning a “security plan” was organized in October and the “control of electrical installations had just been done”, he said.

An investigation for “arson” was opened by the prosecution of Nantes because of the existence of three separate fire points in the cathedral, and uncertainty remains on the cause of the incident.
