Huawei and Zte are a threat to U.S. national security. This is what the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established today together with the Homeland Security Bureau, a national security agency. US companies will therefore not be able to draw on a $ 8.3 billion government fund to purchase equipment from the two Chinese telecommunications giants. In a statement, the director of the FCC, Ajit Pai, declares that companies pose risks to the US communication networks and to “our 5G future”. “Both companies have close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese military apparatus,” added Pai. The designation as threats to national security is effective immediately

Huawei and ZTE did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but previously harshly criticized FCC’s actions. FCC commissioner Geoffrey Starks said that “unreliable equipment” is still used in US networks and said the US Congress must allocate funds for replacements. In May 2019, Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency and banning U.S. companies from using telecommunication equipment made by companies that pose a security risk. The Trump administration also added Huawei to its blacklist last year.
