Mercedes brace at Zeltweg with third Verstappen. Charles hits Seb in turn 3, the race ended for both on the first lap

Lewis Hamilton had too much desire for revenge, too much competitive power. The world champion dominated the second weekend of the season by winning the Styrian GP, which he had already mortgaged yesterday with an amazing pole in the wet. After the misstep on Sunday, Lewis made it clear that he is always the owner of the Circus: victory number 85 and Michael Schumacher’s 91 are getting closer. Nothing to do for Max Verstappen, who also tried to worry him throughout the race. But at this moment the difference between Mercedes and Red Bull remains and was revealed in full in the final race, when the Dutchman was joined and passed by Valtteri Bottas. The fourth place of Alexander Albon’s other Red Bull certified the values on the track: in races not affected by the inputs of the Safety Cars, these are the two strongest in the championship.

Red sink

Ferrari cries, this time there is really nothing to stick to. The disaster took place at the start, in turn 3, with Charles Leclerc who dared to overtake Sebastian Vettel, damaging the rear wing and damaging his SF1000 in turn. Result: withdrawal for both. “The worst conclusion for a weekend started uphill” the bitter words of Mattia Binotto. The blow is double, also because this weekend it would have been important to check the progress of the aerodynamic package brought to try to go back. With the accident on the first lap there was no way to verify it. But what scares the fans the most is the hint made by the team principal to a possible conceptual design error. If this were the case, the hopes of rising quickly would be reduced to zero.

Perez and Norris shine

The GP was dominated by Hamilton, who controlled the race, made his stop and kept Verstappen at a distance. Behind the first three great test of Sergio Perez with the Racing Point: the Mexican was good at managing the soft tires in the first stint and then with medium tire he made some overtaking to remember, such as the one outside on Sainz in turn 4. In the final he was penalized by a contact on Albon and took advantage of Lando Norris, who took a fifth precious place. Generous race for Daniel Ricciardo, eighth with Renault who saw the withdrawal of Ocon. Our Antonio Giovinazzi finished 14th with Alfa Romeo. Next Sunday we return to the track but change locations: the third race is scheduled in Hungary.
