South Korean triathlete abused by technical staff commits suicide at 22: “Beaten like a dog”

Abuse and humiliation by the technical staff would have tormented her for years. Eventually Choi Suk-hyeon, a 22-year-old South Korean triathlete, committed suicide for the violence she allegedly reported several times by not listening. To report the news is the BBC.

The athlete was chosen to join the South Korean National Triathlon team in 2015, still a teenager. Over the years, the girl would have been a victim of humiliation and violence. To witness it there would be some recordings quoted by the BBC in which, for example, a male voice is heard that says: “You! Come here. Lock your jaws, ”followed by the sound of a slap.

Choi Suk-hyeon’s parents also decided to make public the diary that the girl kept, which reads that “she cried every day” and that she “preferred to die”. The athlete was confident that he had been repeatedly “beaten like a dog”.

“Choi has sought help from many public institutions, but all have ignored his reasons,” an acquaintance of the young woman told the AFP news agency. The Korean authorities deny having ignored the athlete’s complaints.
