Ferrari’s start to the season looks like a dark nightmare. Two qualifying competitions, moreover on the same circuit and with different climatic conditions, same result: a tenth and an eleventh place. At the moment, the Maranello team is not only not a world championship team, but is struggling with difficulty in the middle of the ranking, like any Racing Point.
Mattia Binotto, team principal of the Rossa, honestly admitted a disconcerting situation: “A really disappointing day. We have to accept the stopwatch verdict that never lies. In two qualifications on the same track, even in different conditions we have never been competitive, not only against those who in the past few years had been our direct opponents but also with others who, until yesterday, were constantly behind us“.
No updates were needed hastily brought to Zeltweg and which were brought forward by a week compared to the original program: “We made a lot of efforts to anticipate a series of updates to the car, but the results have not been seen on the track. We have to understand why and work to change a state of affairs that is not up to a team bearing the Ferrari name. No emotional reactions, but we can’t hide reality“.
We remember that Charles Leclerc, penalized by three positions for damaging the Russian Daniil Kvyat during Q2, will start from the fourteenth position. Ferrari is looking forward to a Sunday of great passion, in which the goal will be to bring both drivers to the points area. A far from edifying goal, which speaks volumes about the direction taken and which increasingly puts Binotto on the defendants’ bench.
