Salvini’s racist phrase about Roma

During a demonstration organized by the right-wing opposition today in Piazza del Popolo, Rome, the leader of the League Matteo Salvini held a rally talking about many topics, including the regional and administrative elections that will be held in the coming months. After talking about the need for a mayor other than Virginia Raggi, elected with the 5 Star Movement, Salvini said that “the capital of this country cannot remain in the minds of tourists for potholes, for burnt buses, for Roma and for the mice », in fact putting on the same level an ethnic minority – that of the Roma – to unpleasant problems that have been affecting Rome for years.

It is not the first time that Salvini speaks racistly about the Roma: a year ago he had addressed a racist insult both on television and on social networks to a Roma woman who had contested him. More generally, when he talks about integration and reception, Salvini often uses forcing and expressions that fuel hostility towards foreigners – such as the term “clandestine” to indicate a person who lives illegally in the Italian territory – as well as spreading a large number of false information. .

Five years ago Beppe Grillo, founder of the M5S, had said a similar thing: in a tweet that was later deleted he had written that new administrative elections must be held in Rome “before the city is submerged by mice, rubbish and illegal immigrants”.
