Internazionale still has a minimal chance of winning the league title after Saturday evening. The team of coach Antonio Conte dealt 0-3 with Genoa in a little sparkling match and therefore climbed to second place. Romelu Lukaku impressed by scoring two out of three goals. The Belgian is in his first season for Inter now on 23 goals and only has to tolerate Ronaldo and Stefan Nyers, who reached 25 and 26 goals in their first year in the Giuseppe Meazza respectively.
Inter clearly had the initiative in the match in the first half and had little to fear from Genoa in a defensive sense. The Milanese certainly did not play sparkling, but turned up in a dangerous way in front of the opponent’s goal. Good shooting opportunities for Marcelo Brozovic and Christian Eriksen missed the goal, but Lukaku did finish it after more than half an hour. The Belgian striker cleverly walked out of the back of defender Cristian Zapata and was able to hit heads from close range from a good cross by Cristiano Biraghi: 0-1.
The only time that Genoa became dangerous was just before half time, when Filip Jagiello curled a free kick just wide of Samir Handanovic’s goal, whose wall appeared to be completely wrong. Jagiello was allowed to take that free kick, because specialist Lasse Schöne would only make an appearance in the second half and was therefore not yet on the field.
The game changed in the second half: Internazionale showed less quality football and saw Genoa gradually getting closer to its own goal. Huge opportunities did not yield, although left back Domenico Criscito could have handled better with a shot that now went wild. Just as Inter seemed to be under more pressure, visitors hit the counter. Victor Moses reached the backline on the right flank and served substitute Alexis Sánchez, who put his foot against the half-high ball in the cold: 0-2.
In injury time, Lukaku signed with a clever individual action for the final chord. The attacker passed his first opponent with scissors, then cut to his left leg and was able to slide in quietly: 0-3.
