They call them return infections. Because there is not only the risk of autochthonous, “national” outbreaks, but also those caused by foreigners, often workers who are returning to Italy also in view of the reopening of flights to the European Union starting from 1 July. The fears are related to the reduced control of the coronavirus in demographic giants such as the United States, Russia or India. The danger of contagions from abroad is exemplified by the last outbreak in Fiumicino, near Rome, originating from a Bangladeshi citizen who returned from his country. In the meantime, in Veneto, the aim is to swab caregivers who arrive outside Europe.

The return of workers from abroad

“It is necessary to increase checks on international flights, in recent weeks we have had too many cases from Bangladesh”, so the councilor for Health of Lazio Alessio D’Amato. In the ASL Roma 3, in fact, the epidemiological investigation for the outbreak in Fiumicino continues, which has 4 new connected cases: it is an employee of the Indispensa restaurant, two cohabitants of the Bangladesh employee and a customer intercepted at the drive-in in Casal Bernocchi where they are over 1,300 swabs were carried out for the epidemiological investigation. Also in the ASL Roma 2 there was a positive case of return from Bangladesh. And also in this case the international contact tracing procedures have been activated. The risk also derives from the fact that the country, close to India, is currently among the most affected by Covid and with an out of control situation. Added to this is the fact that compulsory quarantine is often not followed by workers returning to Italy from their country, triggering the risk of new outbreaks starting from families where infection is easier.

Swabs for extra EU carers

Free tests for carers who return to Italy from non-EU countries and who resume their service in families in Veneto. The initiative is from the president of Veneto, Luca Zaia who stressed that to use the service, it will be necessary to turn to the regional health system, starting from general practitioners. “It’s a way to protect the elderly and their families,” said Zaia, explaining that “the swabs will be done in real time.” “There is no obligation, but the recommendation to undergo a tampon, free of charge”, explained the councilor for health of the Veneto, Manuela Lanzarin, noting that “it is conceivable, it is optimal, that the carers welcome the call for the protection of their clients who are mostly elderly people or people with disabilities. We ask for their maximum participation, but also for the support of assisted family members ยป. The tests may be requested from the Veneto health facilities, general practitioners and health districts. In Veneto there are an estimated 90,000 carers, mostly from Eastern European countries such as Moldova, Romania and Ukraine.
