Preliminary final race with audience in Kemmel
On the program today: 10 local laps of 15 km, good for a total of 1,500 vertical meters. The hotspots on the course are the Lettenberg (which runs parallel to the Kemmelberg) and the less heavy side of the Scherpenberg, but also the undulating road between De Klijte and Kemmel, which is known for the fan formations in Ghent-Wevelgem, is not too underestimate.
The game went as expected with some fans and a tight pace. After several attempts by Meurisse, among others, it was finally Alex Colman who was able to stay ahead of a group and crossed the finish line first. D’Heygere finished second and Smets completed the top three.
Provisional last game with audience
For the riders it was also the provisional last race with an audience on Belgian soil. Minister of Sports, Ben Weyts (NV-A), announced this afternoon that all sports matches must take place without an audience from tomorrow.
Special safety measures do apply to Kemmel Koers. For example, in the center of Kemmel, wearing a mouth mask was mandatory. Most of the spectators therefore strictly adhered to the rules, although keeping distance proved to be a more difficult matter.
