The year 2020 is not exactly known as the year of affordable flagships. Partly because of the implementation of 5G support, you shouldn’t be surprised if a high-end smartphone costs around 1,000 euros. Even the OnePlus 8 with the suggested retail price of 700 euros is on the expensive side for the Chinese manufacturer. Especially for everyone who longs back to the days where OnePlus was seen as flagship killer, there is now the OnePlus Nord.
OnePlus Nord officially revealed
The OnePlus Nord launch event took place this afternoon on July 21 at 4:00 PM. What made this reveal special is that you couldn’t ‘just’ turn on your laptop or PC to watch. Instead, you had to download an application, and then watched the event through augmented reality. Despite the unusual setting, we got a good idea of what the Nord had to offer.
The new smartphone, like its big brothers, offers support for 5G. Instead of the Snapdragon 865, the Snapdragon 765G is used in this case. This chipset is a bit slower, but you will not notice it very much with daily use. With that, the promise of OnePlus holds that every device will receive 5G support from the company in 2020. Unfortunately, we have to wait a while in the Benelux until we can fully enjoy it.
Premium design en display
That the OnePlus Nord is an affordable alternative to the flagships of today, you certainly don’t see from the design. That’s surprisingly premium. You get the same high build quality as with the OnePlus 8 series, with a metal frame sandwiched between the Gorilla Glass on the front and back. The size is comparable to the regular OnePlus 8, so it still fits slightly in your pocket. The exact dimensions are 158.3 x 73.3 x 8.2 millimeters and the device weighs 184 grams.
The OnePlus Nord is equipped with a large 6.44-inch Full HD + AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 20: 9. The refresh rate is 90Hz. This ensures a smoother display than what one is usually used to from a smartphone. The standard is still 60Hz today. 90Hz displays are quite special, especially in the middle segment. In contrast to the OnePlus 8 series, the screen of the Nord is completely flat. A fingerprint scanner is incorporated under the display.
Camera and battery
The OnePlus Nord is equipped with no less than six cameras in total. Two of them are on the front of the device, similar to how the Huawei P40 Pro has this. It is a regular 32MP camera and an 8MP wide-angle camera. The latter is useful when making group selfies. There are four cameras on the back: a primary 48MP camera, 8MP wide-angle camera (108 degrees), 5MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro sensor. Recording videos is possible in up to 4K at 30 frames per second.
The battery capacity of the OnePlus Nord is 4115 mAh. As with the OnePlus 8, there is no option with the Nord to charge the device wirelessly. However, the affordable flagship supports Warp Charge 30T, which should bring the battery from 0% to 70% in 30 minutes thanks to the included charger. Out of the box, the smartphone runs on Android 10 with OxygenOS over it. OnePlus guarantees two major software updates, plus three years of security updates.

The OnePlus Nord is available in two colors – Blue Marble and Gray Onyx. The new smartphone will be available from August 4, 2020 via OnePlus.com.

OnePlus Buds also revealed
We already wrote about the OnePlus Buds a few days ago, and the leaked information is all correct. Granted, the Apple AirPods have certainly been looked at for inspiration, but you can still see clear differences with the high-end earphones from Apple. Unlike the Bullets from OnePlus, the Buds are on-ear earphones, which means that no extra cap is needed in your ear canal.
In the presentation, OnePlus explained why the company’s first fully wireless earphones took so long to arrive. By far the most important argument for this, according to the OnePlus CEO, was ‘battery life’. The OnePlus Buds are therefore equipped with a very good battery life: 7 hours on a single cycle, and another 23 hours of extra listening pleasure in the charging case. Also important: the Buds of OnePlus are the only earphones that support Warp Charge worldwide. Within 10 minutes there is again for 10 hours of listening pleasure in the case.
There are 13.4mm dynamic drivers in the OnePlus Buds for sublime audio quality. In combination with Bass Boost and Dolby Atmos support, the user has clear vocals, soft bass and richer tones. There is no active noise canceling available. However, there are three microphones per cap built in to filter out the ambient noise during voice recordings and telephone calls.
With a weight of 4.6 grams, the ears are very light, although OnePlus promises that they will stay in place. Combine that with the fact that an IPX4 water resistance rating is included, and you know the Buds are a great companion for going to the gym. There is also a latency of only 0.1 seconds, making the sound almost synchronous with the video content that comes with it.
OnePlus Buds price and release
The OnePlus Buds are available in three colors: White, Gray and Nord Blue. The list price of the earplugs is 89 euros and they will be available for pre-order from July 21 at 5 p.m.
