Maserati Ghibli gets a hybrid version

The following two sentences are taken from the global Maserati press release:
“With the global Maserati Ghibli, the pitchfork brand has entered the world of electrification” and also “the new Maserati Ghibli represents one of Maserati’s ambitious projects”.

After these two sentences my threshold of expectations from the sequel was very high, a few lines later they were already completely betrayed. Not a world of electrification and not an ambitious project. This is simply a version of the Ghibli with a four-cylinder 2.0 engine instead of the 3.5-liter V6 to which a 48-volt alternator and an electric supercharger are attached. Allowing electricity consumers to operate without using the gasoline engine, and airflow to the turbocharger even at low speeds.

There are many similarities between this engine and Alpha’s 2.0-liter engine. Although the name of the maximum power from this unit is 280 hp and here in Maserati the maximum power stands at 330 hp. These are 20 horses less compared to 350 hp in the standard version, and with 5.7 seconds per century even Maserati’s promises to improve performance are not much left, since the standard version does it in 5.5 seconds. The maximum speed of the “hybrid” version is 255 km / h Compared to 267 in normal. The official fuel consumption of this version stands at 11.7 km per liter.

Maserati’s explanation for choosing this type of electric reinforcement rather than using a standard hybrid engine or even a plug-in hybrid unit is explained by the weight savings and the placement of the smaller battery in the back improves weight distribution. This explanation is half true, in the section on savings, but not on weight – but on money.

Maserati does not currently have on the shelf any hybrid unit or rechargeable hybrid socket that it can make use of.

It is quite clear that in order to survive, and left to be competitive, just to survive Maserati must offer even partial electrification in its cars. Whether in Gibli or more models in the future.

But when its stunning V6 sound was one of the big incentives to buy it in addition to the exterior appearance, it’s unclear how many of the brand’s customers will find interest in this version. Certainly when competitors offer rechargeable versions a socket with ranges of a few tens of kilometers in electric power only.
