London, Italian quarantine stop from 10 July: but only in England

LONDON – From Friday 10 July, the mandatory and so far very strict quarantine for Italians and British people who will return to England from Italy will end. But, at least for the time being, the exemption will not apply if you want to enter the rest of the United Kingdom. “Repubblica” can anticipate the announcement that British Transport Minister Grant Shapps will make this morning.

All those, including Italian residents but also tourists, who will return or arrive from Italy to England – and not to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, that is, to the rest of the United Kingdom, where different rules will apply – from next Friday (and not from Monday 6 as has been speculated in the last hours) they will not be forced to self-isolate for two weeks, as is currently required.

To enjoy the government exemption applied to England alone (which will not be guaranteed to other coronavirus-prone countries such as the United States and Brazil) will be a list of nations that will be announced today. But of course, sources from the British Ministry of Transport explain, Italy, Germany, France and Spain will be included, among others. The relatively low contagion rates of coronaviruses in these countries were decisive and convinced London to make an exception.

However, passengers arriving from Italy, once they arrive at the English border, will however have to declare to the border authorities where they will reside in England and also other countries that they may have visited in the two weeks prior to arrival. If you had passed through one of the countries not included in the list of exemptions (the complete one will be published today), then self-isolation would still be necessary for two weeks.

The exemption for now only applies to England and the list of exempted countries is not yet complete. All this because Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – which have lower infection rates than England – would have opposed the free movement of people arriving from abroad. Therefore, Italians arriving overseas will not be subjected to quarantine only if arriving in England, while it is very likely that they will be in Scotland, Wales and Ireland in the North (the other countries of the United Kingdom), which will provide further details and updates in day.
