Liverpool and Zenit agree: Russians pay 12 million for defender (31)

Dejan Lovren is an official Zenit player. The Croatian defender comes over from Liverpool, which receives around twelve million euros. Lovren, 31, signs a three-year contract with the champion of Russia.

Lovren was overtaken in the pecking order at Liverpool by Joe Gomez, who took over the spot in the center back next to Virgil van Dijk. This made a switch to Zenit interesting for the rock-hard defender. Lovren says on the website of his new club that he is looking forward to the challenge. “I will try to earn the respect of the supporters by working hard. It will not be easy, but I will do everything I can!”
The move puts an end to a six-year stint with Liverpool for Lovren. In those years, he played nearly 200 games for The Reds and won the league title, European Super Cup, Club World Cup and Champions League. Liverpool, through trainer Jürgen Klopp, is grateful for the contribution of the Croat, who was ‘very important to the team’.
