Long neglected, the Abobo district in Abidjan has a bad reputation. But less than four months before the Ivorian presidential election, the mayor, Hamed Bakayoko, also Minister of Defense and close to President Alassane Ouattara, is launching a vast operation of “health”. The facades are restored, the walls repainted in bright colors, the streets cleaned. Will these beautification work be enough to change the image of a neighborhood deemed to be dangerous? Not sure. It is enough to leave the main arteries to realize that buildings look gray.
