In Russia, the crime rate using high technologies on the Internet has increased more than 20 times over the past seven years. This was announced by the official representative of the Investigative Committee Svetlana Petrenko.
In 2019, this indicator almost doubled compared to 2018, she said.
“In 2019 and for 5 months of this year, the Investigative Committee investigated more than 13 thousand crimes committed using information technology, as well as in the field of computer information,” Petrenko said in an interview with the Zvezda TV channel.
The forensic investigators from a specialized department who are dealing with this problem have special equipment, including mobile systems that allow even remote digital data to be extracted from electronic mobile devices, she said.
According to Petrenko, this technique was used more than 26 thousand times in 2019. In more than 17 thousand cases of 13 thousand crimes, information significant for the investigation was obtained.
In June, the Deputy Head of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, at a meeting on the draft concept of public security in Russia until 2030, said that “over the past five months, the number of crimes using the Internet, information technology, and mobile communications amounted to more than 180 thousand.”
