Robin Haase was eliminated on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the NK tennis. The 33-year-old Hagenaar lost in Amstelveen after a game of more than two hours from the unplaced Jesper de Jong.
Twenty-year-old De Jong lost the first set on the clay courts of the National Tennis Center, but narrowly fought back in the game due to a tiebreak. The Noord-Hollander made the difference in the third act: 4-6, 7-6 (5) and 6-2.
De Jong occupies the 369th position in the world ranking and is therefore 199 places lower than Haase, who was placed first as the leader of Dutch tennis. In his opening match on Tuesday, he was still too strong for Alban Meuffels in two sets.
The NK tennis is for many players the first official tournament in months. Haase’s last appearance was in March, when he crashed on a challenger in the Kazakh Nur-Sultan against the Russian Aslan Karatsev.
In the semifinals De Jong awaits a showdown with Tim van Rijthoven, who settled in the quarterfinals with Sem Verbeek (4-6, 6-0 and 6-1). In December 2019, Van Rijthoven was crowned Dutch champion in Alphen aan den Rijn.
The KNLTB decided to organize this NK seven months after that last edition, so that the Dutch tennis players can gain rhythm for the larger tournaments later this year. The international tennis season has been standing still since March due to the corona crisis and will resume in August.
