As of next month, Google will no longer allow ads promoting conspiracy theories about the corona virus. Google announced this on Friday.
In addition, Google will no longer place ads next to content that promotes these conspiracy theories. Websites that go against this new Google policy can be completely excluded from Google’s advertising services.
The new advertising policy is about content that goes against “scientific consensus”, for example, giving incorrect information about the origin of the corona virus. For example, there are conspiracy theories that the coronavirus was made in a Chinese laboratory as a bioweapon and that the virus is a hoax.
Google’s advertising policy is already strict on medical disinformation, but is now also looking more critically at disinformation specifically aimed at COVID-19. The Verge writes that the new advertising policy will take effect on August 18.
