God and Putin in the Russian Constitution

Vladimir Putin until 2036. Russia has told him again “from”: yes. Yesterday, today, tomorrow: still, always and forever president of the largest Federation in the world. “Little time has passed since the collapse of the Soviet Union. We are still vulnerable. We need stability and time to strengthen the country and institutions “: in a few words, – including even to those voters who voted against the changes proposed by his government -, Putin showed gratitude to his nation after the publication of the referendum results . The approval came from almost 78% of the voters, while 22.27% instead rejected the proposed amendments. To the majority who supported his government’s choices, the president immediately sent his “thank you very much for your trust”.

From today, by law, same-sex marriages are forbidden in Russia, “historical truth” must be honored about the fundamental role of the Soviet Union in the defeat of Nazism in World War II, – which the Federation calls Great Patriotic War -. In the Russian Constitution there is now God, history and Russian language. And even a zero, a new symbol of the president’s power: having canceled his previous mandates, he will be able to stand for the next two elections and remain in office until 2036.

Space Putin. An unprecedented vote, neither in heaven nor on earth: Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, reported that cosmonaut “Anatoly Ivanishin became the first man to vote in orbit”. According to the state polling institute VtSiom, 71% of Russians were ready for constitutional change, while according to the first exit polls, 76% of voters were in favor. Today the results exceeded the Kremlin’s expectations. But they are figures without any surprise, no wonder.

Falshivka, falshivka, falshivka. A falsehood: it was the word that the blogger Aleksey Novalny has repeated more in the videos on social networks referring to the vote that has just taken place, pointing the index against the man who wants to be “the eternal sovereign of Russia” to command together ” his circle of friends. ” Opponents and activists have repeatedly expressed the irregularity of the vote: “Never have so many people contacted us because they are under pressure to vote”, this is the vote “the most manipulated and least transparent in the history of the country,” said Gregory Mekonyants , at the head of the Golos non-governmental association, a word that in Russian means “vote”, but also “voice”, the one that many opponents of the president have been removed or turned off.

Chechen plebiscite. Without waiting for the closing of the ballot box, the Chechen caudillo Kadyrov, surrounded by his allies and advisers in front of the cameras, proposed (not ironically) to grant the perpetual government license: “Nobody can take Putin’s place, nobody can replace him, I propose his presidency for life. ” At the end of the match, Chechnya has shown itself as a fort to support the president: 97.92% of the voters voted in favor. An annoyed Dimitry Peskov, Putin’s mustachioed and faithful spokesman, had to remember, however, that “the presidency for life is not allowed by the Constitution”, neither in its previous version, nor in the current version. But de facto Putin will be able to govern even after celebrating 87 years.

Even in the annexed Crimea in 2014, even in the rebel Dagestan, the percentages have touched or exceeded 90% of approval. Only in one territory did a thunderous “niet” prevail: it happened in the north-east latitude of the country, where the nenec live, the men who speak Uralic languages and cross the sidereal frost on the sleds, together with their reindeer.

Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, the False Dimitry. Russia knows how to find unforgettable names for those who guide it and make its history. No one yet knows how Putin will be remembered after his infinite era: there are those who want him holy and those who have already baptized him vecny, the eternal. It is certain that for the changes wanted by the lord of the new, hybrid Cold War, more citizens went to the polls than in 1993, the year of the previous constitutional referendum, when the text that will now be changed was adopted.

Europe does not congratulate. Peter Stano, EU spokesman, asked that the triumph of the ballot box be investigated: “there are reports and allegations of irregularities during the vote, including coercions, violations of the secret of the vote, police violence against journalists”. It is yet another appeal coming from the west to that Moscow which, after counting the votes, tomorrow will return only to that of the Covid-19 infections, which in Russia exceeded 650,000.
