Nathan Markelo plays for FC Twente next season, the Tukkers confirm via the official channels. The 21-year-old right-wing defender comes over on a rental basis from Everton, where the Orange youth international is not in the plans of manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Markelo hopes to develop himself with playing minutes in the first team of FC Twente. “I recently renewed my contract with Everton, but there is not yet a direct view of a place in the first team,” says the former youth player of FC Volendam. “The chance is greater at FC Twente and that is why it is good for me to play for FC Twente this year. I know the club well, because Jahnoah, my younger brother plays at Twente in the academy. That is why it is extra fun to play here this season. “
Technical director Jan Streuer is satisfied with winning his fourth addition to FC Twente. “Nathangelo is a talented right-footed defender who has gone through all representative youth teams of Orange and is seen at Everton as a very promising player,” said Streuer. “It is not for nothing that the English club recently extended his contract. He will have plenty of opportunities to play minutes in the first team this season, it is up to him to force a starting spot.”
Markelo played in the youth for ASV De Dijk and Purmersteijn and at the age of twelve made the switch to the youth academy of FC Volendam. After five seasons, the defender left Everton’s youth academy in 2017. He has his official debut before the Toffees not yet made. After Vaclav Cerny (FC Utrecht) and Kik Pierie (Ajax), Markelo is the third mercenary at FC Twente, which Gijs Smal took over from Volendam on a free transfer.
