farmers catch the first specimens

The first boar captured by an agricultural producer is about 50 kilos. He ended up in one of the cages placed near the Agriculture New cooperative, in the Decima Malafede Reserve. The specimen has small dimensions also because, in addition to being young, the wild boars of southern Rome are of the Maremma breed (Sus scrofa majori). Therefore smaller and less prolific than the imported ones that rage in Monte Mario and Cassia.

The use of cages

With the capture of the first wild boars by the agricultural producers “the containment plan signed last year by the Lazio Region”, Coldiretti announced. But cages, in themselves, are not new. “We have been using them since the end of 2018 in the Decima Malafede Reserve and also in the Marcigliana Reserve – explained Maurizio Gubbiotti – the capture that took place in the Cooperativa Agricoltura Nuova, however, is the first that takes place by a farm”. And as a result of the memorandum of understanding signed by Coldiretti, Federparchi and Legambiente, it ensures producers the possibility of using the animal for breeding or for sale to entities authorized to carry out slaughter.

Safety and ecological balance

“The launch of the containment plan – explained the president of Coldiretti Rome, Niccolò Sacchetti – represents an important step towards a necessary ecological balance, which allows to ensure greater road safety, reducing accidents caused by wildlife crossings and at the same time to prevent the damage linked to damaged crops, which are causing huge damage to farmers, already harassed by the economic crisis caused by the pandemic “. In this regard, Coldiretti has already asked the Region for financial compensation for farmers who have suffered damage from wildlife.

The spread of the species

The presence of ungulates is reported daily throughout the region. They are photographed from the beaches of Lake Albano, to the Castelli Romani, to the countryside of Maccarese, where it had never been observed in the past. But even in an urban context it is not difficult to identify them. The cage in which the specimen of the Agriculture New cooperative was attracted, for example, is located a few kilometers away from the inhabited center of Spinaceto where, the wild boars, go right under the doors of the houses.

Containment in the countryside and in the city

The only time the ungulates were not spotted was during the lockdown. And perhaps, thanks to the quarantine imposed to contain the new Coronavirus, they have gained new territories. As is the case with Maccarese. Waiting for them, in rural contexts, there are now producers with their specially primed cages. However, it is more difficult to implement the containment plan in the city environment. Between the buildings and in the condominium gardens, evidently, the traps cannot be positioned.
