‘Everyone knew I wanted to stay with Feyenoord, but with a two-year contract’

Leroy Fer is happy with his new contract with Feyenoord. Negotiations were initially difficult, because the thirty-year-old midfielder wanted to sign for two years.

“I was very happy with last season,” said Fer in an interview with De Telegraaf. After persistent injuries, he surprised himself by playing 23 of the 25 league games. At the end of June, the 11-time international extended his contract. “Everyone knew I wanted to stay with Feyenoord.”
“It took a little longer before I signed, and that had to do with the duration of the contract,” said Fer. “Feyenoord wanted to highlight the option year, but I wanted a two-season contract. In the end we came out together and that is a sign of confidence. I am very grateful to Feyenoord for that.”
Fer hopes to remain injury-free again next season. “It is nice that I can participate for the full hundred percent from the first training session and come in very differently than last year.”
