Various Drenthe nature organizations and residents of Groningen Airport Eelde (GAE) have reacted with concern and indignation to the airport’s plans to handle more military traffic. They let us know in a letter to responsible minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure.
According to the organizations, permitting military jet aircraft is an unacceptable attack on the living environment in the head of Drenthe. “It will cause great damage to the surrounding nature reserves, the estate zone and the three major Natura 2000 areas,” the letter said. The organizations see more military traffic as contempt for the environment, which is being attacked by this.
Airport looking for money
Groningen Airport Eelde is looking at new possibilities and therefore also new income. With this, the airport expects to be able to largely eliminate the annual operating deficit. Expanding tasks is crucial for this.
Eelde and Maastricht Airport are also financed by the provinces and municipalities. The rest by the State and Eindhoven Airport by Defense. Unjustified, they find in Eelde. If both airports are seen as airports of national importance, the national government must also contribute to this.
The organizations – Natuur en Milieufederatie Drenthe, Vereniging Omwonenden Luchthaven Eelde, IVN Eelde / Paterswolde and Stichting Het Drentse Landschap – are not the only ones who have concerns. Local politics in Tynaarlo are also questionable.
“You shouldn’t want this as a municipality,” says Jurryt Vellinga, chairperson of Leefbaar Tynaarlo. The party wants clarification from the Mayor and Aldermen of Tynaarlo. Vellinga wonders what the Commission thinks of the proposal and to what extent the Commission is aware of it at all.
